I see no beauty

I see no beauty in this hill of stone;
It reeks of time and the forgetful years.
This was a place of wonder once, enthroned
By god, where thousands prayed away their fears.
Today, the pilgrims of a latter age
Care not for faith and other things unseen.
Cameras click. A picture’s all the rage –
A snap to show the folks where they have been.
There’s nothing holy now; just the carcass
Of old belief, profaned by human sight.
O Lord! Reach out with your hand of darkness,
And snuff forever those flashing lights.
We cling to transient things that please the eye:
A world of faint impressions where all gods die.
